Episode 11 of Spool’s Out Radio was an episode-length mix celebrating the still very alive and confusing subculture of v̙̫͕͆͛ͬ̂a̯̩̼̭̤̓͐ͭp̝̩̦̹͉͑͂ó̻̊r͚̉̀̂̓ͮ͋ͩw̗̮̓a͓̝̻͎v̭̠̮̈́̈͗ͫ̂̚ȅ͊̃ͬͮ.͎͙̠̝͔m̅ͫ̈ͧ̍̒4͒̏̿ͤ͂ͣ̏a, wherein dozens of musicians and labels (mostly from the USA, but with a few exceptions) replicate the spirit of Blade Runner‘s culture-jamming, digitised, bitcrushed vision of the future via endless seas of self-recorded 4/4 experimentation with retro 80s commercial music tropes, sample splicing, and some maddeningly confusing naming conventions (often including Japanese and Chinese characters). Thanks to Resonance 104.4fm for broadcasting.
As usual, this is available as a podcast (just search for ‘Spools Out’) and up on mixcloud (above). Coming soon… more guest mixes, plus a chat with the fine folks from Pirate Modernity.
(below is the stunning gif version of 2 8 1 4’s incredible album, soon to be released via cassette tape)
