West Yorkshire based Crow Versus Crow does very many things, including a community radio show, a podcast, running a limited edition press, visual art and design, plus of course a stellar arm as a record label. Their next release is a pro-dubbed cassette edition of 50, comprising Beast Mask Supremacist, the third release from enigmatic Leeds-based duo Grey Guides. Here’s an exclusive stream of the audio for all you Spoolers:
The duo of Lynden St. John (vocals, tapes) and Matt Hurricane-Salt (guitar) describe themselves pretty aptly on their soundcloud bio as “Tape distress from the shadowlands of pop”, with the label also rightly namechecking the likes of early Throbbing Gristle, Blood Stereo, William Burroughs, and Chrome’s Alien Soundtracks as key influences.
The music staggers along bathed in hiss, echo, and garbled voices, sounding like aging tape recordings of a ritual or séance reassembled into chilling noise transmissions. This music creeps under your skin and deep into the recesses of consciousness. The titles are ace to boot, e.g. ‘Just Burned Down a Care Home’, or ‘Yoo Doo Rite’.
Beast Mask Supremacist is released via Crow Versus Crow on Friday 21st October 2016, copies can be ordered via bandcamp
